Introduction to Issue 3: Reality

The third issue of Oppositional Conversations takes on the question of “reality”—how it is constructed, construed, and contested in every sphere of social life. The essays, editorials, and artistic pieces we have assembled explore how the notion of “reality” is critical to the working of everything by closely tracking a sample of its infinite variety of articulations across a diverse set institutions and occasions. These essays roam from theme parks designed to simulate the feeling of traversing the “real world” in a single afternoon to theories and practices of economic development, the success of which can only be achieved through the production of particular “reality effects.” We are grateful to the contributors who have made it possible for this issue to feature performance artists and photographers tackling the question, “What is Real?” alongside social scientists exploring how contestations around the “real” suffuse academic discourse itself. - Zine Magubane, Editor
